Creating commissioned artwork is something I hold very close to my heart. Each one offers the chance to sink my teeth into something new and explore unfamiliar ideas, allowing my creative practice to evolve in ways it otherwise might not. No two commissions are the same and that sense of discovery is a big part of what I love about them.
Taking on commissioned work also feels like a genuine honour. Each piece is a collaboration where I’m invited into someone else’s vision. Many of the works I’m asked to create hold deep personal meaning, marking memories or moments that matter greatly to my client. Being trusted to translate something so sentimental into an artwork is not something I take lightly. I approach each piece with care and attention, knowing it will be treasured long after it leaves my studio.
Commissioned artwork is for anyone drawn to my distinctive pen and ink style looking for a bespoke piece. Whether you arrive with a clear idea or just a feeling you’d like to explore, it offers the opportunity to create something entirely unique which you can treasure for years to come. Throughout this post I’ll explain in more depth how the commission process works so that you can decide if its right for you.
The Commission Process
The process begins simply, with a conversation. From there, each stage is guided with care, ensuring you feel informed and supported while the artwork gradually takes shape. Here’s a step by step of how the process unfolds…
The initial conversation: This can take place in person, over the phone, or via text or email. It’s a chance for you to get in touch with your ideas, whether that’s the size of the artwork, the subject matter, or simply a feeling you’d like to explore. There’s no pressure to have everything worked out at this stage, reaching out with a few initial thoughts is great!
Finalising ideas/ concepts: After our initial conversation, the next steps depend on how open or specific your ideas are. If you have a looser vision, I may ask you to share a few reference photos and will then create some initial sketches to explore direction and composition. We’ll continue to develop these ideas together until we reach the final concept.
If your commission is more specific, for example, a portrait of a particular pet or animal, the process is more straightforward. I’ll ask you to send a small selection of images and you’ll be invited to choose a favourite. This chosen image will guide the pose and overall direction of the final artwork. During this stage, we’ll also discuss the size of the piece and framing options (if required).
Price and time frame: Once we’ve finalised the concept, I’ll provide a price and estimated timeframe. Pricing is informed by the number of hours the piece is likely to take, as well as any framing requirements. I’ll also let you know my next available time slot and an estimated completion date (please note this may be subject to change).
Deposit: Once the ideas, price, and timeframe have been agreed, I’ll ask for a 50% deposit via BACS to secure your commission slot in my diary. Your place is confirmed as soon as the deposit is received.
Time to get started: Around a week before your scheduled slot, I’ll be in touch to confirm you’re happy for me to begin. This is the best time to share any final thoughts or small changes. I’ll also ask whether you’d like to receive progress updates while the artwork is taking shape.
Framing and packaging: Once complete, the artwork will be framed (if required) and carefully packaged, ready for collection or delivery.
Feedback: When you receive your artwork, I love to hear what you think!
A commission may be right for you if you’re looking for an artwork that feels personal and considered, something created with intention, rather than chosen in a moment. Many people approach me with a clear idea of what they’d like, while others arrive with a memory or concept they want to explore. Both are equally welcome.
If you’re drawn to my pen and ink style and like the idea of being part of a collaborative, thoughtful process, a commission offers the space to create something that reflects you. There’s no need to have every detail figured out from the start, the process is designed to unfold gently, with care and conversation along the way.
If commissioning a piece feels like the right next step, I’d love to hear from you. You can reach out via the contact page or explore my portfolio here.
